- I think that the theme of, " The monsters are due on maple street." is, Trust can be hard to achieve and easily broken with one wrong move. I think that because at the start of the story. They were all friendly neighbors, then they started turning on each other by the end of the story. The first thing that caused them to get all worked up was when they were trying to check why they didn't have power, les Goodmans car suddenly turned on. Everyone immediately started getting suspicious, saying stuff like "Seems that the general impression holds that maybe one family isnt what we think they are. Monsters from outer space or something." They also even started camping outside of his house to check if there was anything suspicious going on. Also, in act II Charlie randomly started accusing steve, saying stuff like "You best watch who you're seen with, Steve! Until we get all this straightened out, you ain't exactly above suspicion yourself." all they did was just raise the suspicion that they had for eachother. In conclusion, all of Maple Street was just full of suspicion for their fellow neighbors. The true enemy, was suspicion.
