  • In post World War II Africa, a large number of countries had trouble with becoming independent; an example of this was showcased by Ghana's first Prime minister who gradually become authoritarian, leaving Ghana's political rule unstable decades since.
  • In the 1950's Kwame Nkrumah desired freedom from colonial rule in Ghana. Nkrumah had realized that colonizers should not be in charge; He held peaceful protests and rallies. Debt with the united states and the British tried to isolate Nkrumah initially was a leading cause to struggling with achieving independence. Despite this, Ghana was able to#160; gain its independence in 1957 with Nkrumah as prime minister.
  • Ghana must be free from colonial rule!
  • I declare myself as president for life. Everyone is to follow this one-party state.
  • Due to Nkrumah's sudden controlling manner, he gradually grew unpopular, and was overthrew. If Nkrumah hadn't morphed his influence into an authoritarian government structure, limiting and restricting the people of Africa, I believe that there wouldnt be as much struggle around the topic of independence.
  • Africa currently still struggles with political instability, rebellions, poverty, disease, and many more issues in the steps to gaining independence, leaving many problems still unsolved today. Ghana for instance, has alternated between civilian and military rules even decades since.
