This is Felix. He is a peasant and a member of the third estate. The year is 1789.
Times are not good, there are massive food shortages, taxes are high, and life is just not getting better for people like Felix.
lolllll
Because everyone can afford books now, most people read about these cool enlightenment ideas that give everyone the same rights and opportunities. And people were aware these ideas were in effect in America.
Natural Rights!
The nobles and the monarchy do not like when people talk about enlightenment ideas.
Eventually people started taking to the streets to protest the awful living conditions and lack of representation of the third estate received.
Wow, this is a movement!
Third Estate!
Give us rights!
Soon enough King Louis XVI had to do something that hadn't been done for a long time; get representatives from all three estates together to discuss.
We might have have to call a meeting of the estates general
Sir, the third estate is going crazy and we are running out of money!
The First Estate: Clergy
In case you are wondering who made up the first and second estate here they are:
The Second Estate: Nobility
Uh, I had some ideas I wanted to share!
The estates general meeting did not go well after the first and second estate locked the third estate representatives out of the meeting room and refused to listen to their complaints.
Because they were locked out of the original meeting they decided to have their own meeting at a nearby tennis court and took the tennis court oath to make a new constitution.
We are the National Assembly and we will make the new constitution!
Now that the third estate had separated from the rest, the French revolution had officially started and members of the third estate wanted to let the monarchy know.
For gods sakes LEAVE!
The Bastille
We are gonna storm that prison, we have had enough, you in?
Eventually the mob made it into the bastille and burned it to the ground, sending a message and commencing the revolution.
Wow, this is crazy
Soon enough the "National Assembly" created their own constitution which granted equality to all men and abolished the unfair advantages that nobles have.
Declaration of the Rights of Man
Eventually King Louis and the Queen, Marie Antoinette realized they had to get out of France or else soon enough they would be in danger.
Babe I want to LEAVE!
Marie Antoinette was heavily disliked by the French population because she was very wasteful with French Money.
Out of desperation and fear the King and the Queen tried to flee but were caught, the year is 1791.
Isn't that King Louis and the Queen?
The King and the Queen were both convicted of treason and executed.
I'm going, but the State will always remain
Soon after the king was executed Felix started noticing some weird changes to France, including the shut down of all churches.
CLOSED FOREVER
I was really planning on worshipping today.
One of the main leaders of the revolution use the execution of the King to bring in his radical agenda. Robespierre created very radical changes and destroyed cities in his wake when they did not agree with extreme revolution ideas.
He called it: The Committee of Public Safety! But people referred to it as the reign of terror!
Ironically the Committee of Public Safety was extremely dangerous. Eventually public opinion of Robespierre went down drastically.
After public demand and fear from other government officials, Robespierre was executed in 1794.
Wow, they all drop like flies.
After some turbulent years a young military commander named Napoleon Bonaparte was assembling a army to overthrow the the still corrupt government.
No thank you, I am not the fighting type.
We could use an able bodied man like you, we are gonna overthrow the government!
Soon after Napoleon successfully overthrew the government in the "Coup d'état" he declared himself Emperor. The year is 1804.
I am now the Emperor!
In one of his first acts as Emperor Napoleon wanted to bring much needed law and order to a disorganized France.
Mhhhh...
Your Highness, something has to be done to control the population and bring law and order.
Thus the Napoleonic Code was written to provide a civil code for the French people. Overall the Napoleonic Code was successful although it deprived women of many rights.
The Napoleonic Code
Napoleon had many enemies throughout Europe including Great Britain. In an effort to hurt the British economy he ordered the Continental System, a blockade.
Mhhhh... I have an Idea
Your Highness we need to stop British aggression somehow!
Where are you'll headed off to?
Blockade around Britain, Kings orders!
Napoleon caused war all throughout Europe on his many military campaigns. Eventually he was exiled in 1815 after multiple defeats.
I DEMAND YOU TAKE ME BACK!
I am sorry Mr. Bonaparte but I can't.
While exiled in the island of Elba, Napoleon knew France was nothing without him so soon enough he devised an escape plan.
I just have to escape on that ship
They have no idea I am down here. France, I'm back baby!
Now on to France!
Eventually when Napoleon made it back he was able to easily win over his former troops and gain all the support he once had.
Wow, that guy over there complaining really looks familiar.
It's me! Your commander, Napoleon Bonaparte!
Now with his army strong Napoleon embarked on a new campaign into Waterloo, unfortunately this battle did not go as expected for Napoleon.
After a stunning defeat at the hands of Britain and the Duke of Wellington at waterloo, Napoleon was captured and this time exiled to a small island near Africa called St. Helena.
The Napoleon era was officially over
Mr. Bonaparte, you are under arrest!
I DEMAND YOU TAKE ME BACK!
I am sorry Mr. Bonaparte but I can't and please stop asking, this time the journey is very long.
Because of the Napoleonic wars, the French revolution, and overall danger France was posing to the rest of Europe European leaders sat down in Vienna to discuss how to prevent further conflict in Europe again. They made many geographic, political, and societal changes to Europe and especially France. Those changes halted conflict in Europe for many years and created new countries in the process.
Congress of Vienna
Being alive during the French Revolution was one if the craziest times to be alive. Felix saw the rise of the third estate, the execution of King Louis, the rise and fall of Robespierre, and the rise of fall of Napoleon. The effects of the revolution were both good in bad. The most common theme was that in times of uncertainty, unrest, and violence someone seized power and pivoted the movement for their own gain. The biggest lesson from the French revolution we can take away is that when a movement goes too far often times history can repeat it self and it is important to always hold people in public office accountable.
