- Laptops are great! Hospitals rely on them to help patients, however not everything about laptops is positive.
- More than 272 million new laptops are manufactured every year, making the IT industry responsible for as much greenhouse gas pollution as the entire airline industry. This equates to the IT industry contributing 2% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
- Laptop components consist of upto 30-40% plastic. Plastic is bad for the environment as it threatens wildlife and spreads toxins.
- To produce a laptop, it creates around 214 kilograms of C02. The laptop will then continue to produce, on average, 2.96 kilograms of C02 every month.
- The components of a typical laptop contain mercury, lead and other heavy materials. If these toxins end up in a landfill instead of a recycling centre they could contaminate the groundwater, surface water and soil.
- Laptops require electricity to have power! Electricity causes damage to the environment by impacting air pollution, climate change and water pollution. Electricity is generated via fossil fuel combustion.
