Storyboard Text

  • The structure of ear comprises three main sections: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
  • The outer or external earis made up of the pinna, the auditory canal and the ear drum.
  • The outer ear includes:auricle /pinna (cartilage covered by skin placed on opposite sides of the head) the auditory canal (also called the ear canal) and the eardrum outer layer (also called the tympanic membrane).
  • The middle earcontains a chain of three tiny bones the malleus, incus and stapes which is present in the same order.
  • The middle ear includes theeardrum,cavity (also called the tympanic cavity), and theossicles (3 tiny bones that are attached)malleus (or hammer) - long handle attached to the eardrumincus (or anvil) - the bridge bone between the malleus and the stapes(or stirrup) - the footplate; the smallest bone in the body.
  • The inner includesoval window - connects the middle ear with the inner earsemicircular ducts - filled with fluid; attached to cochlea and nerves; send information on balance and head position to the brain.
  • The inner ear also includes cochlea - spiral-shaped organ of hearing; transforms sound into signals that get sent to the brainauditory tube - drains fluid from the middle ear into the throat behind the nose.
