- Darry yells at Ponyboy because he fell asleep in the lot and came home late.
- I didn't mean to. I was talking to Johnny and we both dropped off...
- I shouldn't have fallen asleep in the lot..
- I...I went to sleep in the lot...
- You what?
- where the heck have you been? Do you know what time it is? Well, its two in the morning kiddo. Another hour and I would have had the police after you. Where were you, Ponyboy? Where in the almighty universe were you?
- Hey, Ponyboy, where ya been?
- Darry explains to Darry that he and Soda was worried about him and was about to call the police on him.
- Why is Darry so hard on me?
- I said I didn't mean to...
- I reckon it never occured to you that your brothers might be worrying their heads off and afraid to call the police because something like that could get you thrown in a boys´ home so quick it´d make your head spin. And you were asleep in the lot? Ponyboy, what on earth is the matter with you? Can you use your head? You haven even got a coat on.
- I didn't mean to! I didn't think! I forgot! That´s all I hear out of you! Can ´ t you think of anything?
- Darry yells at Soda because he tries to stand up for Ponyboy. Ponyboy tells Darry to not yell at him but Darry hits him.
- You don ´ t yell at him!
- I should have stayed in the lot with Johnny...
- You keep your trap shut! I ´ m sick and tired of hearing you stick up for him.
- *Slaps*
