  • The Different Rules of Summer
  • Sparrows Falling From the Sky
  • The End of Summer
  • Aristotle lives with his mother and father, he has 2 older sisters and a brother who the family treats as dead. He feels distanced from his family because he was born so late. One day, a friendless and bored Aristotle leaves his house to kill time at a public pool where he meets the mysterious Dante and forms a friendship with him. Dante is different than other boys, being more kind and sincere than most teens his age, which Aristotle is fascinated by. Aristotle is surprised by Dante's healthy relationship with his parents compared to his own. One day after swimming together, they yell at a group of boys for shooting down a sparrow, which Dante tearfully buries.
  • Letters on a Page
  • The morning after Dante buries the sparrow, Aristotle wakes up with a bad case of the Flu. He has several fever dreams in which he is searching for Dante, his father, and his imprisoned brother, Bernardo. Dante sketches Aristotle as he is recovering, but refuses to show him. After Aristotle recovers, he is told by Dante that he is moving to Chicago at the end of the summer. Before Aristotle can react, Dante notices and injured sparrow in the road, and rushes to help it. A car almost swerves into Dante , but Aristotle pushes himself in the way and gets hit instead.
  • Remember the Rain
  • Aristotle is severely injured after the accident, while Dante is barely hurt and wrought with guilt. Dante gives AristotleWar and Peace and The Grapes of Wrath as well as his sketchbook. Aristotle is disgusted by this, he hates that Dante feels like he owes him for saving his life. His mother tells him that he should see a therapist, which Aristotle refuses to do unless she tells him what happened to his brother. Aristotle and his father read books silently together, which he remarks as their way of talking. Aristotle's father offers to buy Aristotle a truck for his birthday, which Aristotle happily agrees to. Aristotle dreads the upcoming school year without Dante, who tells him that the two things he loves the most in the world are swimming and Aristotle, before he departs for Chicago.
  • All the Secrets of the Universe
  • Aristotle goes back to school and is reluctant to tell the other kids about the accident. Two girls, Gina Navarro and Susie Byrd, bother Aristotle about what happened. Ari's father gives him the truck that he was promised, a 1957 Chevy pickup truck. He falls for a girl named Illeana, and makes it a goal to kiss her. Dante sends several letters while in Chicago, chronicling his delinquent activities; going to parties, smoking weed, and drinking. He also reveals that he has experimented with kissing both boys and girls, and prefers to kiss boys over girls. Aristotle gets his casts off and finds a stray dog after going for a walk, he decides to name it 'Legs' after his own broken ones. During his Christmas break, he finds an envelope with his brother's name on it, but refuses to look through it. Aristotle goes to a New Year's Eve party and kisses Illeana, who refuses to be his girlfriend. He later finds out that she is pregnant and got married to her current boyfriend at that time. Aristotle, on the last day of school, asks Gina and Susie to drive him to the desert so that he could get drunk.
  • Summer starts again and Dante returns from Chicago, the two boys catch up in the desert. Dante tells Aristotle that his mother is pregnant, and hopes that the new baby is a boy so that it can marry a girl and have children, unlike him. Aristotle is accepting of Dante, but doesn't want him to try to kiss him. However, Dante is able to convince Ari to kiss him, saying that he himself hasn't actually kissed a boy yet, and wanted to try. Aristotle says he doesn't feel anything after, which upsets Dante, who is clearly in love with Ari. Ari's mom visits his Aunt Ophelia in Tucson. Dante works at a drugstore, where Gina and Susie one day visit. They ask Dante about the accident, which he gladly tells them about, infuriating Aristotle because they promised not to talk about it. They hang out in the desert again, this time bringing two joints and getting high. Dante tells Ari that he likes his coworker Daniel, afterwards it starts raining and the two run out of the truck naked. Ari's Aunt Ophelia dies of a stroke and him and his father drive out to Tucson. Ari remembers living at her house for a few months when he was little. His parents tell him it was because of his mother breaking down at Bernardo's trial. At the funeral, Ari notices that none of his other family are there. This is because Ophelia lived with another woman, which many of them disapproved of. Ari is disappointed at this revelation, believing that it wasn't fair. Afterwards, his mother offers to finally tell him about Bernardo and what he did.
  • Aristotle's mother tells him everything about Bernardo, he is in prison for life because he murdered a transgender prostitute when he was 15. Aristotle returns home and sees Dante's father, who tells him that Dante was jumped and is in the hospital. Aristotle finds out he was jumped because he was kissing Daniel. An infuriated Aristotle finds out the name of one of the guys who jumped Dante, and returns the favor by beating him up and breaking his nose. Dante's father asks Ari if he knows why Dante was jumped, Aristotle tells him the truth, which doesn't surprise his father because he could tell Dante was gay from how he looks at Ari. Dante's mother agrees, saying that she thinks Dante is in love with him and that Daniel is a stand-in for Ari. Dante is discharged from the hospital and Daniel visits him, which angers Aristotle. Dante admits to Ari that when he kisses Daniel, he imagines Ari in his head. Aristotle brushes this off and tells Dante to 'get a new head', which upsets Dante. After this, Aristotle's mother calls a family meeting, where his dad finally tells him about the traumatic experience he went through in the Vietnam War. He says that he is ready to stop running from it, and that Aristotle should stop running from what haunts him, his love for Dante. Aristotle tearfully denies it before his parents accept him and he finally accepts himself. They go bowling with Dante's parents later that night and afterwards Aristotle takes Dante out to the desert. A frustrated Dante tells Ari that they can't be friends anymore because Ari doesn't love him back, which Aristotle responds with an admission that back when they kissed, he had lied about not feeling anything. He asks Dante to kiss him again, which he refuses, telling Ari to kiss him instead. They finally kiss each other and after accepting his love for Dante, Aristotle asks himself, "How could I have ever been ashamed of loving Dante Quintana?"
