- I grew up in Mexico City at a time when the air and water quality were very poor. Dark emission clouds coming out of factories, trucks, and car exhausts were so commonplace, that I became something of a smog connoisseur who preferred the smell of the darker smog than that of the more noxious and foul-smelling white smog when stuck in traffic behind a truck. At that time I always wondered if I was the only person noticing how bad these things and others such as open-air wastewater creeks were on the environment and people, and I resolved to go into the environmental field.

- I then moved to the state of Texas where I was exposed to a lot of clean air, natural beauty, and rural, undeveloped areas. Until recently, this situation remained largely unchanged until about five years ago, when an influx of new development meant to accommodate a more urban landscape and new arrivals began to change the landscape. I have once again started to notice more 'ozone days' in which the air is so cloudy and unsafe, that it is recommended to stay indoors and not drive for the sake of air quality.

- Most recently, I lived for two years in Colorado, where the pristine natural beauty of the Rockies has strengthened my resolve to devote my career to protecting the environment for future generations.
