Storyboard Text

  • "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
  • "Walk on the Ocean" By Toad the Wet Sprocket
  • Comparison
  • This first poem expresses the themes of the ocean, the strength of nature, paths of life, and the little effect of our lives (pessimistically). The traveler rushes across a beach as night falls towards a city. Though the traveler still roams on, the world moves on as if it had never noticed them.
  • "Walk on the Ocean" expresses similar themes to the poem mentioned earlier, but instead in first person. The narrator sings about how they took a trip to the ocean for a small time, but soon had to return to a smoke filled, dangerous, ignorant city that ignored them to the point of not even realizing their absence.
  • Both of these works, though they are two different styles, they both share similar themes. Both of them tell of a lone wanderer that are striving for something. Whether that be a specific goal, peace of mind, or just to make a mark on the world around them, they never seem to succeed. They both deal with the fact that nature stays unaffected.
