- Charlie is a 32-year-old intellectually handicapped guy from New York City who is enrolled in Ms. Kinnian's program for intellectually disabled adults. Charlie has always aspired to be a genius like the people he's around. he also works at Donner’s Bakery as a janitor

- Charlie has undergone numerous tests to determine whether he is "dump enough" for the positions held by Dr. Strauss and Professor Harold Nemur. Following Charlie's selection, he undergoes a number of tests with a mouse named Algernon.
- falling
- Charlie returns to work after becoming a genius, where he is treated differently by his coworkers, who have signed a petition to have him fired because they are uncomfortable with his increasing intelligence, leaving him jobless.
- resolution
- Charlie will travel to Chicago with Dr. Strauss, Professor Nemur, and Algernon to showcase the new invention that boosts a person's IQ. During the lecture, Charlie hears stuff he wasn't aware of, making Charlie irritated. Charlie manages to catch Algernon, and flees the conference.
- Charlie realizes that Algernon is gradually losing his IQ and predicts that it will happen to him as well. Later, Algernon passes away and is buried in Charlie's backyard and puts flowers on his grave.
- Charlie eventually loses all of his intelligence and reverts to his previous IQ, so he decides to leave New York and start a new life where people dont know that Charlie Gordon was once intelligent but then lost everything.
