For my independent reading book, I chose Sunny by Jason Reynolds. In the book the main character Sunny had a talent for running track but after going through grief and growth in his life, he realized that throwing discus fit him better. To show this theme of finding his path, I made my cover take place on a track field with Sunny about to throw a discus. Another element in my cover is Sunny's track friends standing on the sideline cheering him on. I added this because in the book they still supported him when he chose to follow his new dream of throwing discus even if he wasn't on their track team anymore. One last element of my book cover that I wanted to add was Coach Brody who supported Sunny when he was grieving and helped him find a new sport that he was passionate about.

LuBy Jason Reynolds
For my independent reading book, I chose Lu to continue the track book series by Jason Reynolds. In my book the main character Lu was going through some hard times such as his fathers impending fatherhood when they found out Lu’s mom was pregnant and his past family trauma of his father drug dealing. Lu slowly repairs his relationship with his father while practicing every day on the track field to become a Junior Olympian. To show the theme of redemption and family, I made a cover with Lu and his father about to hug to show how they were repairing their relationship and supporting each other. I chose to put Lu and his father Lu on the cover instead of Lu on a track field because I felt that in the book, the author was trying to make a strong connection between Lu and his past mistakes and trauma and bringing him through the steps of repairing that and becoming a stronger person.
