- Charlie Gordon has an IQ of 68, and works in a box factory. His coworkers and "friends" take advantage and make fun of him, but he is blissfully unaware, believing they're just being funny and friendly.
- Climax
- Charlie undergoes testing in a lab with Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur. He feels as if he has failed them, and that he is stupid. His teacher, Ms. Kinnian, explains that they can make Charlie smart. Charlie meets a mouse named Algernon that has undergone surgery to make him smart, and Algernon impresses Charlie with his intellect.
- Falling Action

- Charlie undergoes the same surgery done to Algernon, and his IQ is tripled. He begins to learn at an incredible pace, and befriends Algernon. He talks to Algernon every day, and continues testing and learning, eventually surpassing the intelligence of those who taught him.
- Resolution

- Algernon passes away. It is discovered that the operation was not permanent, and he died after losing his newfound intelligence. Charlie is reassured that this will not happen to him, but he does his own experiments and research to discover his intelligence may not last.

- As predicted, Charlie's intelligence begins to fade. Charlie sees this happening, but is unable to do anything about it. He asks Ms. Kinnian to put flowers on Algernon's grave, showing how he has accepted that he will return to his old self soon.
- Charlie has returned to his former self. All other being that have went through the surgery passed away soon after losing their intelligence, implying that Charlie dies soon after, though it is not explicitly mentioned.
