  • Hello Rams, My names Tru Willis I am a student here at Silas doing the Sports Medicine program. Today, I'm here to inform you about*Female athletes* you need to know this information to insure the safest environment for all athletes!!
  • Menstrual Cycles!!! :)-Non-active females usually begin menstruation at 12 years old- Active females begin at 13.5 to 15.5 years Dysmenorrhea – menstrual cramps - sometimes a cause to absences Amenorrhea – absence of menstruation Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) – Symptoms can interfere with training and competition
  • *Any females having menstrual problems should be seen by a physician preferably a gynecologist
  • What is a gynecologist? you might ask..- A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in caring for the reproductive health in females. That can mean anything from pelvic exams, Pap tests and testing and treatment for vaginal infections. They help with infertility, cysts, pelvic pain etc. Females any age can go see one but for the young they have what is called a Pediatric and adolescents gynecologist
  • Next is Pregnancy!!- Gains in body weight and fat accumulation can affect exercise- Some pregnancy hormones increase joint laxity, making sprains and strains more likely - Center of gravity shifts forward Blood sugar may decrease more quickly during exercise – caution!
  • Exercise and a healthy diet can decrease some problems
  • Female Athlete Triad -3 disorders commonly seen together- An Eating Disorder-Amenorrhea - absence of menstruation -Osteoporosis - a condition where bones get weakand brittle -Particularly common among females in sports that require an ideal body weight or body fat
  • There is two eating disorders we commonly see with females and that is:- Anorexia Nervosa Bulimia Nervosa
