Storyboard Text

  • MARIAM
  • Mariam, one of two female protagonists, is a quiet, thoughtful child at the start of the book. Born out of wedlock to a rich and married businessman (Jalil) and his former housekeeper (Nana), Mariam resents her mother's strict ways and the fact that she only sees her father once a week. Mariam's shame at being illegitimate makes her unable to stand up for herself.
  • Mariam physically describes herself to have dark hair and skin, with a “long face,” which is an insecurity of hers. Mariam's physical and emotional anxiety likely originates from her mother, Nana, who constantly brings her down.
  • TARIQ
  • Tariq is a scrappy, easygoing boy, with pale, hazel eyes and gentle, elegant hands. As an adult, he is tall and thin, with strong, workman's hands. He lost one leg to a land mine when he was six years old.
  • He can be mischievous and goofy, and he is always eager to prove his strength by joining in any fight and by defending Laila against other neighborhood boys. Tariq adores Laila and is unfailingly loyal to her, returning to Kabul to find her after years of imprisonment and exile in Pakistan. He is also respectful and kind with a chill personality
  • LAILA
  • Laila's idealism and independence are challenged when she decides to marry Rasheed in order to give her unborn child by Tariq a father. Upon becoming a mother, Laila puts her children first and finds she is willing to accept limitations she once would have openly mocked.
  • Beautiful young lady, green eyes, blonde curls, high cheek bones,She has a healthy skepticism toward authority and a headstrong nature that inspires those around her.
  • RASHEED
  • Rasheed is a widowed shoemaker whose first wife and son died many years before his marriage to 15-year-old Mariam. He is fat with a beard. Broad shoulder and quite big.
  • Conservative and willful, Rasheed quickly instructs Mariam on what he believes an ideal wife should be: subservient, obedient, and fertile.
  • JALIL
  • A rich man. He always dresses up in suits; mainly a brown suit with a red tie. He has a beard.
  • Mariam's father, a successful cinema owner in Herat, who has three wives and nine legitimate children in addition to Mariam. Jalil comes to see Mariam every week when she is a child, but he never allows her to visit him in Herat or join the rest of his family there. He acts as if he cares for Laila but really he is ashamed and only visits her out of guilt and to make himself feel better.
  • NANA
  • Nana is bitter and unhappy. She constantly complains about Jalil to Mariam and admonishes her not to trust any man. She tries to brainwash Mariam into not leaving the house because the world will hate her. In truth she is trying to save Mariam from the misogyny and the abuse, but she is also trying to strike fear in Mariam to never leave the house.
  • She is quite older and skinny. Grey hair. She wasn't able to get any education or proper health care.
