  • My friend, you look remarkable!
  • Verbal Irony
  • You are luckily met my dear Fortunato.
  • Verbal Irony
  • Luchesi knows nothing of wine! I must distinguish it for you!
  • Luchesi must extinguish if my wine is Amontillado!
  • I'm fine, really. Lets go taste that Amontillado!
  • Fortunato is described as wearing motley, a tight-fitted parti-striped dress. However, he is not aware of the fact that by wearing this outfit, he is being perceived as a fool. Montresor sees him as one too. This is situational irony because Fortunato didn't intentionally wear motley in the intention to be perceived as a fool.
  • Dramatic Irony
  • Let's go back, you're health is very important to me!
  • When Fortunato and Montresor encounter each other, Montresor greets him by saying, "'My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met.'". This is verbal irony because Fortunato is actually very unlucky that he encountered Montresor. However, Fortunato does not know this yet.
  • Dramatic Irony
  • Maybe Medoc will help!
  • Montresor tells Fortuntato that he might've bought a bottle of amontillado, but he has his doubts. Montresor mentions he wants Luchesi to distinguish his wine in order to lure Fortunato into the catacombs. This is verbal irony because Montresor knows that Fortunato prided himself on his knowledge of wine, so Montresor says this to him to lure him into the catacombs.
  • Situational Irony
  • To the buried around us!
  • and to your long life...
  • Before Montresor and Fortunato entered the catacombs, Montresor put on a mask of black silk to protect himself from the nitre. However, Fortunato was left unprotected. Later on, Fortunato developed a cough, which is one of the symptoms of nitre. Montresor tells fortunato he is concerned for his health. This is dramatic irony because readers know that Montresor does not really care about Fortunato's health.
  • When Montresor suggests they go back, Fortunato gets offended and tells Montresor he still wants to taste the Amontillado. Montresor apologizes and suggests that Medoc, a type of wine, will help Fortunato feel better. This is situational irony because readers know that Montresor is just trying to keep Fortunato vunerable.
  • Before they both drink the Medoc, they decide to do a toast. Fortunato drinks for all the dead people around them, and Montresor toasts for Fortunato's long life. This is situational irony because Fortunato is toasting for the dead, however, he doesn't know that he's going to die soon.
