- Welcome! First, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Dr. Karlee Jones, and I am 45 years old. I am the Chief Medical Examiner for our county.

- MEDICAL EXAMINER DEFINITION
- Many of you might not know, but I am in charge of figuring out how the person suddenly died or finding out the cause of a gruesome death.
- Medical examiners are not an easy job because they have to deal with different types of deaths and must use their skills to confirm why and how a person passed. - EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
- Becoming a medical examiner is a long journey but worth it. I went to a four-year college, then medical school, and got my medical license to get my residency and fellowship focusing on forensic pathology.

- If a person dies under suspicious events and we want to know the cause. The medical examiner's job is to do an autopsy.
- In one of the articles in Indeed that was written by Dr. Pooja Santwani titled, What Does a Medical Examiner Do (With Duties and Salary), one of the essential jobs that a medical examiner does is to determine the cause of death of a person, and to do that is to perform an autopsy. - During an autopsy, I examine the body of a deceased person, collect samples from the body, and also examine photographs from the event where the person died.
- It is also mentioned in the article written by Dr. Santwani that another duty of a medical examiner is to collect bodily samples, examine crime scene photographs further to evaluate the cause of death of a person (Santwani, 2023). - After knowing the cause of death, I now have to write a death certificate.
- Dr. Santwani also mentioned another essential duty of a medical examiner: after performing an autopsy, the medical examiner is also responsible for writing the deceased person's death certificate (Santwani, 2023). - If I find out that the death is indeed suspicious, I report the findings to police officers. During trials, I stand as an expert witness and explain my findings to prove that the manner of death is suspicious.

- Additionally, according to Dr. Santwani if a medical examiner determines a suspicious death, the findings will be reported to the police and they are also professional witnesses in trials (Santwani, 2023).ReferenceSantwani, P. - CHALLENGES OF MEDICAL EXAMINER
- We are good at figuring out the cause of death of a person; however, there are times that it is a challenge to identify the proper cause of the death of a person.
- Dr. Jones what are some challenges that you face as a medical examiner?
- Although their lives are not harmed, many medical examiners face career challenges. In one of the articles titled What it's like in Forensic Pathology: Shadowing Dr. Gill, written by the AMA staff news writers mentioned that medical examiners do not always determine the cause of death of every deceased individual (Staff News Writer, 2022). Another challenge is during the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in many deaths related to the pandemic and other cases such as murder (Staff News Writer, 2022). Reference 14, J., Writer, S. N.
