  • Salmonella Rachel is eating at a restaurant and orders her favourite chicken dish, however after a few bites she feels a bit uneasy and when she inspects the food she sees that the chicken is pink. Horrified she goes to spit it out, although she has already swallowed some. She quickly rushes home.
  • Symptoms Approximately eight hours later, when trying to sleep, Rachel keeps waking up with abdominal pain, and constantly having to go up to be sick. As well as this she keeps getting severe headaches and sometimes diarrhoea. She continues feeling like this for a week until she decides to phone the doctor.
  • . Rachel phones the doctor and he educates her on what she has - Salmonella and what to do. However Rachel is still a bit confused and asks him how she could have gotten Salmonella.
  • It sounds like you have salmonella - it’s very good you didn’t come in today as Salmonella is actually highly contagious. Salmonella is caused by the salmonella bacteria. You will most probably recover fine without any specific treatment, though I suggest you drink plenty of fluids and isolate yourself so that you do not spread it, do not even go near your pets as they can spread it too.
  • Salmonella is typically contracted through eating uncooked poultry, meat, eggs or egg products or drinking unpasteurised milk. Although there is not a vaccine you can take against the salmonella infection, there are vaccine programs for chickens and turkeys which have significantly reduced contamination of the many varieties which make people ill.
