The fugitive slave law of 1850 provided southerns with the legal right to capture slaves who escaped to free states. This lead to war because the southerns were coming into free land and taking slaves.
The Bleeding Kansas Act of (1854) was multiple violent attacks between pro slavery and anti slavery in regards to Kansas being a free or slave state. This caused extreme violence based on popular soveriegnty.
