Good morning Ms Andromeda, I am would like to ask you a few questions.
Good day Mr Poseidon, I'm available for a couple of minutes, what would you like clarity on?
Role and rights of trade union organizer
Thank you, I'm curious as to what your job is as a trade union organizer.
A trade union representative is person who works for the trade union in order to recruit new members, support existing members and promote the unions goals and campaigns. Then there are trade union representatives who also called shop stewards they are elected by union members within a workplace to represent their interests.
Role and rights of trade union organizer
What is then your role as a trade union organizer?
I act as a mediator between management and employees. Conduct job evaluations and address workplace ills so that employees can have a conducive working environment.
Well we don't have the same rights as shops stewards but we can be granted access in a workplace when there is a dispute. We have to ensure that employers adhere to the EEA and BCEA labour laws making sure that employees are treated fairly. We consult with management and act as union caucus in negotiations.
Mr Posiedon an employee approaches Ms. Andromeda who is the trade union organizer in the office so as to find out more about her job her role and responsibilities
Role and rights of trade union organizer
So you work for both the employer and the union? Are you then not negatively affected, or sidelined by employers for defending employees?
Ms Andromeda proceeds to explain and starts by explaining what a trade union organizer is and what her role is
Role and rights of trade union organizer
So basically, you mediate between employers and employees. You are the middleman between the union and management, members and the union and employers and employees.
She then explains what her job entails, mentioning examples. Explains that they need to regulate the relationship between the employers and employees.
Role and rights of trade union organizer
Thank you for sparing your time and explaining everything to me.
The union organizer names the rights of union organizers and mentions a responsibility.
No, I am employed by the trade union not the company. So, the employer's negative bias cannot really affect me. My job is to protect the employees' interests so I will not always be liked by employers, but they do have to grant me access to the workplace and disclose information to me. I have to educate union members about their rights and provide them counsel.
More information regarding her rights and responsibilities are offered by Ms. Andromeda the union organizer and Mr. Poseidon then checks whether he understands fully what the union organizer's role is.
Yes, and then after fighting for the workers' rights, I then have to make sure that the employers implement the changes on the recommendations that may have made on the company policy in order to improve the work environment.
Mr. Poseidon is satisfied with the information provided by Ms. Andromeda
