- Ponyboy gets upset because he doesn't want to change his hair. Johnny explains how they have to go incognito if they don't want the police to find them.
- Ponyboy gets upset because he doesn't want to change his hair as it was his pride as a greaser. Johnny explains how they have to if they don't want the police to find them.

- Ponyboy and Johnny sadly change their hair which defines them as greasers. Ponyboy cuts and bleaches his hair while Johnny just cuts his. Their hair was about to be maimed.
- Miserably, Ponyboy goes outside to rinse the bleach out of his hair with cold water. They both realize that there is no going back now. Both of them felt invalidated as greasers.
- Boy howdy, this really makes me look tuff. I look like a blasted pansy.
