  • Gandhi joins the Indian National Congress He wants all religious sects but mainly Hindus and Muslims to reconcile. In 1920 he launches a noncooperation campaign urging all Indians to make their own cotton, boycotting British goods. That puts him in jail from 1922 to 1924. In 1930 he leads more than 60,000 Indians on a 240-mile walk to make their own salt. It was a protest against a British tax on salt. They all get arrested (of course). Then again in 1931 Gandhi and the British viceroy signed an agreement to end all civil disobedience in India against British rule. This included stopping Satyagraha and releasing all imprisoned Indians. They were also allowed to sell and make their own salt.
  • Under a new ruler, Gandhi is imprisoned once more. He fasts in prison to protest against the Britains choice to segregate a group of indians called the untouchables. Due to a big emotional upheaval, the British agree to change their policy. Gandhi resigns as a political leader but comes back Early in WWII requesting independence immediately for India's aide in the war. Gandhi goes to jail AGAIN from 1942-44.
  • India finally gets independence from Britain in 1947. But, a partition divided India and Pakistan into Hindu and Muslim cities. Then lots of rioting between Hindus and Muslims break out over the partition. Gandhi fasts until the rioters pledge peace. When Gandhi is going to pray in Delhi, he is assassinated by a Hindu who was angry at him for trying to reconcile the Hindus and Muslims
