  • In the section "The Cigarette" page 117 Marji is 12 years old. She learns to rebel against her mother at this moment. Marji is furious with her mother and resolves to smoke her first cigarette in private to show to herself that she has matured. This is significant since it marks the beginning of Marji's smoking career. Marji later developed an addiction, which has harmed both her mental and physical health. If Marji hadn't started smoking at such an early age, she may not have continued to do so later in life.
  • I'm all grown up
  • In this portion of "Tryol," page 171, Marji does not spend Christmas with her new pals, but rather with her new roommate Lucia. Marji has never celebrated Christmas, so when the holiday arrives, she is alone and lonely. This had an influence on Marji since she was able to experience Christianity; Lucia and her family brought Marji to a three-hour midnight mass. Her life would not have been drastically different if she hadn't gone, but if it hadn't been for Lucia, Marji would have been sitting in her room by herself doing who knows what.
  • Nice to meet you Marji
  • Mot mom! Come meet My roommate
  • Hello, thank you for letting me stay!
  • In the section "The Veil" page 242 marji ends up in the hospital after being homeless. She was smoking almost every day, eating from trash cans, and sleeping outdoors, and she was essentially in the worst shape she had ever been in. The doctor tells Marji that she has acute bronchitis that was never addressed. He tells her she must quit smoking immediately. She may not have been able to return home if she hadn't taken the wrong turn. Marji finally chose to take care of herself and concentrate on her emotional and physical well-being after this traumatic period in her life.
  • I just want to go home
  • Marji, you cannot smoke anymore, it is too dangerous
