- Robert Hooke was the person the coin the term cell. He noticed that plant cells look like little rooms, so he called them cells.
- Matthias Schleiden
- All plants are made up of cells
- Robert Brown discovered the nucleus. He also made one of the earliest detailed descriptions of the nucleus.
- Rudolf Virchow
- Cells come from other cells
- Theodor Schwann discovered that animals are made up of cells. He also discovered that cells have independent lives.

- Mattias Schleiden discovered that all plants are made up of cells. He was also the co-founder of the cell theory.
- Rudolf Virchow discovered that all cells come from preexisting cells. He also was awarded a Copley Medal in 1892.
- Theodor Schwann and Matthias Schleiden discovered cell theory. Rudolf Virchow also had some contributions to cell theory but it was mostly Theodor and Matthias.
