  • Life throws curve balls. One that was thrown to a father in a small house trailer in Oklahoma when something unexpected happened in the middle of the night. The house was at rest. With a seven year old and a little over one year old to fill it with memories during the day, the night is the only time that the house has a chance to sleep. Although the crickets chirp and the cicadas shudder, there is someone else creeping in the shadows. They move slowly and quietly. The hardwood floors creak with every soft step. The creature's hair hung over their face, long and dark. Blackness surrounded them, but they made their way like they had a hundred times before in light. They stalked through the small hallway, past the couches, into the kitchen, and straight into the parent’s bedroom.
  • The rough carpet met their feet and they stood at the father’s side of the bed. Eyes were closed and breathing was slow and they just stood. The father awoke in a tranquil pace, wiping his face with the palm of his hand in a midnight cold sweat. There were the wisps of wheat scratching together in the neighbor’s field. A few dogs were barking in the distance. He peered around the room and glanced at the small human of sorts that stood at his bedside.

  • “Em?” The father said his daughter’s name. His face was confused and remotely frightened. Her long hair was draped over pale skin; the pasty color seemed to shine from the moonlight that had seeped in through the curtains. She stood in her pajamas that were lined with Disney princesses. Her head was lowered slightly and he felt like it was a scene from a movie he had seen. The Exorcist?, he thought.

  • The girl did not move or respond with anything, but a low breathing that sent a chill down his spine. But nothing happened like in the horror movies. There was no weapon, no marks on her face, and nothing to make him feel anything, but uneasy. He swiftly moved her to bed with the only movements she made being a slight motion of walking. He puts her in bed in darkness and russels the covers around her limp body. He checks the baby before going back to bed and falls asleep instantly when his head hits the pillow. Over the next few months, it happens again and again. Sometimes to the father and sometimes to the mother. The presence of their little girl at night contained an essence of surprise and unnerving unlike how she was in the daytime.
  • One morning at breakfast, the father felt the urge to ask a question, “You know that you sleepwalk, right?” The messy haired girl looked at him funny. “Sleepwalk?” She said, not picking at her eggs anymore.“Yeah, you’ll get up in the middle of the night and wake us up. It’s a little scary.”“Oh,” she looks down at her plate, “I don’t remember ever getting up.”
