- The setting of the story takes place in many different places; though it begins in Berlin, Germany. The Hasenburg family includes Irene, Werner, Mutti (The mother) and Pappi (The father) Along with a couple other family members. As times get worse from the Nazis, soldiers, and Hitler; the family has to start moving out of their home, and into a small theater where Jews are held.
- The main character of the story is Irene Hasenburg. In the start of the book, she is around 5 years young.
- This is Irene's older brother, Werner. He protects Irene as they go through struggles together. He is around 7-8 years of age in the start of the book.
- There are so many people, I want to go back to Berlin. It smells so bad in here. I hope Mutti and Pappi are alive.
- The Hasenburg family is taken to the first camp. They stayed for a long time, which is better than having to go to a camp where they can get seriously hurt by the soilders. Lots of time passes as the family soon gets taken on a train to a new camp, far away. The new camp is called Camp Westerbork, where everything is 10x worse.
- ALL JEWS! You must stay in this theater until you are taken to the next further camp. You filthy, dirty beings.
- Mutti, you're alive! I'm so hungry, and I feel so sick and weak. Can we please go home? It's so scary here, I saw somone get beaten!
- Welcome to Camp Westerbork, Jews. Everyone's family will be split up into males and females. You all must do what jobs you are told to do. If you decide not to, you will have consequences. Such as no food, or no clothing.
- No, I'm so sorry but we are stuck here for a while.
