On the morning of July 4, 1187, Kratos stood with the Crusader army under the hot sun near the Horns of Hattin. Saladin’s forces had surrounded them, and smoke filled the air. The battle started with arrows raining down, chaos everywhere, and loud cries all around. When Kratos struck his first enemy, he felt scared but also excited, which pushed him to fight harder. But as the day went on, he grew tired. The Crusader army was weak, thirsty, and outnumbered. When the sacred True Cross was taken, many soldiers lost hope and fled. Kratos tried to run too, but he remembered the old soldier’s words and went back to fight. Still, the Crusaders lost the battle.

Kratos lay on the battlefield, his body aching, his mind empty. Around him, the Crusader army was destroyed. Banners were torn, swords lay broken, and the cries of the wounded filled the air. The True Cross was gone. King Guy of Lusignan had been captured, and Reynald of Châtillon was executed by Saladin. He could not move. His strength was gone. He had fought with everything he had, but it had changed nothing. The Crusaders had lost.Staring at the sky, he thought of his family in Sepphoris. He had fought to protect them, but now he wondered if it even mattered. Yet, deep inside, something refused to give up. The battle was over, but his story was not.

The Battle of Hattin was Saladin’s greatest victory, leading to the recapture of Jerusalem on October 2, 1187. Unlike the Crusaders in 1099, he showed mercy, letting Christians leave if they paid a ransom. His success united the Muslim world and made the Ayyubid dynasty stronger. The fall of Jerusalem shocked Europe, leading to the Third Crusade (1189-1192), where Richard the Lionheart tried to take it back. Though the Crusaders won some battles, Jerusalem stayed under Muslim control. Saladin became known for his honor and fairness, influencing how history remembers Muslim-Christian wars.
