- Hi Bruno, my name is Shmuel. Nice to meet you.

- Bruno misses his grandparents so much as they didn’t come to Out-With. Grandma was mad at Father for joining the Nazy Party, so he didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to when he left Berlin
- Bruno decided to go for a walk and saw a fence with a child behind it who is bald name Shmuel. And Shmuel is very sad as well because he can't find his father.
- Bruno is so suprise to see Shmuel polishing the glasses in the pantry for Father’s birthday. He talks and he gives Shmuel food. Suddenly Lieutenant Kotler- a young and very rude soldier who works for Father- comes in and see the boys talking and Shmuel has eaten something. He got very mad at Shmuel and accused him stealing food from the house. Bruno did not admit that he gave him food. Shmuel gets in trouble.
- Bruno feels terrible for what he did to Shmuel. He sees Shmuel at the fence and tells him he is sorry for being a bad friend. Shmuel forgives him, he holds out his hand and they shake hands.
- Gretel tells Bruno those people in the fence are Jews and they don’t like them. While talking, she finds an egg in her head. Bruno has to get his head shaved as he finds out he and Gretel have lice.
- Father doesn’t see Out-With as a place for children anymore. Bruno is starting to see things on the other side of the fence that he should not. Father decides that the children have to go home to Berlin with Mother.
