  • June 1956 – Supreme Court rules bus segregation unconstitutional
  • I am not moving. Segregation is unfair and a violation of our rights.
  • The desegregation of the American troops by Truman became a huge spark for the civil rights movement.
  • 1963- Birmingham, AL protests and marches
  • With the desegregation of the military forces, also came the desegregation of public schools. Racial segregation in schools was deemed unconstitutional in a 9-0 ruling within this case.
  • 1965- Selma march to Montgomery
  • The civil rights movement took a giant leap forward when bus segregation was announced unconstitutional as well. The Montgomery bus boycott, along with the voice of Rosa Parks, helped kickstart this decision and keep African Americans on the road to more successes with their freedoms and rights.
  • April 1968 - (April 4) Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated
  • These violent Birmingham marches and protests by students showed the passion for the continuous struggle of ending segregation. These marches increased violence, but they also voiced for support and helped lead to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • This march directly led to the passing of the Voting Rights Act and helped contribute greatly to the outcomes of the civil rights movement. These people demonstrated their desire to just exercise their rights and freedoms by taking the violence thrown at them.
  • WE MARCH WITH SELMA!
  • MLK's assassination was so significant to the civil rights movement because it led to an outpouring of anger among African Americans and a national sorrow that helped pave the way for the Fair Housing Act and Civil Rights Act.
  • Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter
