  • Okay guys. That means Quantitative and qualitative research designs based on Positivism and Phenomenology worldviews. Our research will be MIXED method then, with a Pragmatic worldview.
  • Hi Agnes. I'm Samira. Medical scientist. Over there is Sandra and Teboho. Public Health researchers.
  • We understand. That's where we come in. We conduct research and present our findings.
  • What's going to be our research design?
  • The objective is two-fold. 1. Scientific data to help control the disease and 2. data to help control public panic and persuade them to participate in any health intervention that might come.
  • Pleased to meet you all. The Mayor is really worried about the potential public panic. But we all need facts to control both the disease and public anxieties.
  • Good morning . My name is Agnes, Chief of Staff in the Mayor's office.
  • First let's be clear about the research objective.
  • We got all the data back. We have analyzed our qualitative data by first coding them into themes. We then interpreted them by means of a narrative on major themes.
  • I need a bigger sample size to increase confidence levels. My questions will be closed-ended. I need to determine number of cases, infection rates and other date we can draw from the symptomatology of this outbreak; hopefully we can identify causes.
  • I'll draft the report. Fortunately we don't need any data convergence for now since the two research designs serve two divergent issues; which are the clinical information about the disease and the fact based control of public panic.
  • Great. For quantitative data we collated all the numbers and did the math. Our approach is both descriptive and inferential. By this mean we mean telling the data as it is but also making inferences.
  • Alright. A sample size of 20 respondents will be enough for data saturation. Our questions will be open-ended to allow participants to express their feelings and opinions.
  • Thank you all for coming to hear this public health announcement. Now that you have the facts I hope your fears have been allayed. Get vaccinated. Stay safe.
  • The Chief of Staff in the Mayor's office is briefing the researcher. She tells them that the mayor is worried that people will panic, but can't contain this diseases and the public panic without information. We need facts. What are the numbers in terms of infections and infection rate? Why are people panicking. Thanks. But remember scientific facts aren't enough. We are dealing with people's emotions too. We can control the disease based on your findings. But we cannot control public panic without understanding people's fears perceptions.
  • The research report is ready. From this report the Mayo will be able to target her message at the exact issues we discovered, and the demographics they emerged from. Also, the medical scientists and government now have scientific basis to come up with a cure and epidemiological interventions to manage the diseases.
  • And we have numbers in terms of infections, rate of infections. we also found out how the spread can be managed. We used deductive intepretative of our quantitative data.
  • We have analyzed the themes from the qualitative research. The Mayor will now know what the people are saying and feeling about this disease and future medical interventions like vaccinations
  • Planning the Research Design (Worldview and research approaches for data collection, analysis and interpretation)
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Data Collection
  • Research Report Ready for the Mayor and Medical Scientists
  • We all applied inferences to interpret the data. These results must make sense for both the Mayor and the medical scientist.
