- In this scene a black family finds out they are considered American citizens due to the 14th amendment and they are hopeful to find better work and move off the plantation.

- YOU BLACK NEGRO!!! You know you cant purchase no land boy, Niggers have no right to land.
- In this scene a black man tries to exercise his freedom as a citizen in America and buy land for him to work on but he is not able due to black codes.

- We just Betta fix our faces cuz massa let us come back ta work fa some money.
- It’s like we free but we never really do feel it
- In this scene two black people work on the same plantation they were enslaved on just so they can make money even after they are considered citizens of America. They feel like black codes takes away all of their freedom.
