- Shmuel was polishing the glasses. Bruno visited him and gave him food.
- Shmuel! What are you doing? Didn't I tell you to polish those glasses?
- Have you been eating? You have. Did you steal from the fridge?!
- Yes sir, I'm sorry sir....
- After pestering Shmuel for minutes, Shmuel decided to accept the offer, and gulped it down.
- Bruno, do you know this boy?
- ...
- No, I have never seen him in my life, I do not know him.
- Despite Shmuel telling Bruno that he did not want the food as he was scared that he might get caught by Lieutenant Kotler, Bruno still gave him food.

- Just then, Lieutenant Kotler came and scolded Shmuel for not doing his job. He suspected that he had been eating and asked him if he had stolen from the fridge. Shmuel stated that Bruno gave it to him and that he was his friend.

- Lieutenant Kotler seemed confused. He turned to Bruno and asked him whether he knew Shmuel. Bruno was too scared to admit the truth, thus saying that he does not know him and has never talked to him before.
- Lieutenant Kotler seemed satisfied with Bruno's answer and turned the Shmuel, stating that he would come back to collect you and bring you back to the camp after he had polished all the glasses. Shmuel reluctantly agreed with no emotion as if he had no feelings anymore. Bruno felt very guilty and regretful.
