How did you do it!?! The delivery time has been cut in half since you have been the Postmaster.
Continental Congress Meeting
Between Route 1 and Route 2, I believe the second one is faster based on the calculations from the odometer.
1832 - Locomotives Are Put in Use
I'm so glad we got these jobs as clerks!
I know, and I love tossing out the outgoing mail!
Before the late 1700's, mail was delivered by either foot-soldiers or horse drawn carriages and the system mirrored that of Britain's. It was called The Royal Mail System. The colonists believed that there were unfair rules enacted by the system and it was not very advanced so later that century that created their own in 1775.
1847 - Postage Stamp
Now I don't have to pay for the mail I receive!
Can I buy some stamps, please?
In 1775, The Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin as the first Postmaster General. While being a postmaster, he established a postal system within the 13 colonies. Franklin also established more efficient routes, increased delivery time, and determined postal rates. He helped establish what is now the United State Postal Service.
April 1860 to October 1861 - Pony Express
Can you believe it Buddy, soon we'll be in California and we will have traveled for a total of 1,800 miles in only 10 days!?!
The Railway Mail Service began in 1832, but didn't grow much unti the Civil war in 1861. In 1862, mail began to be sorted on the train rather than just sitting in an untouched bag during the journey. Mail cranes were also used so that the trains wouldn’t have to stop to deliver the mail at its destination and to pick up more mail from the town. These techniques saved a lot of time, energy, and money.
1918 - Airmail Begins
I better get going so that this mail gets to D.C. in time.
The first general issued postage stamps went on sale in New York City on July 1, 1847. The stamps cost either 5 or 10 cents. These stamps took the responsibility of paying the shipping cost off of the receiver and letters could also be sent from an individual's home rather than taking it to the local Post Office which made it more convenient.
Absolutely, how many can I get you?
The Pony Express made mail delivery much faster during its time. In 10 days, a letter could travel 1,800 miles from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The Pony Express only ran for 18 months from April 1860 till October 1861 because of the opening of the transcontinental telegraph.
Neigh!!
Mail began to travel by air on May 15, 1918. The United States used Army aircraft and pilots to transport the mail between New York and Washington D.C. By using planes as a way of transportation it allowed mail to be sent to farther places as the technology advanced.
It's so great to be able to use the aircraft to deliver mail too!
