  • Until they finally answered. A nurse hotline picked up. Jane gave her personal information, and immediately started describing the symptoms. We have an appointment available for next week, how does that sound? Jane asked if there were an earlier appointments, but there were none. So she proceeded with the appointment one week later.

  • Jane???
  • About 30 minutes later, the doctor walks out of the office, calling Jane's name. Jane gets up and follows the doctor into the room.

  • I believe it is sinusitis.
  • Jane starts explaining her problems, stating all of the symptoms she has been experiencing, how long she has been experiencing them for, any past medical history, and what her daily lifestyle is like. The doctor makes the assumption that it is just a case of sinusitis, which is just an inflammation of tissues in the sinuses.

  • Jane explained to the doctor that she was going to visit family in India in 2 weeks. The doctor prescribed to her a course of antibiotics for 4 weeks, and told her that it is something minor, and that she should be fine. Jane was told to stay hydrated at all times, and to rest well.

  • Fast forward 2 weeks, Jane and her family were going on their India trip. It had been 4 years since they visited, and everyone was excited to see their grandparents. There was a huge family celebration coming up. Jane still felt sick, and she reached out to her doctor for any advise especially since her symptoms were not going away. The doctor said that she should finish her course of antibiotics first, and that she should be fine afterwards.

  • They boarded their flight, and their 20 hour journey awaited them. Jane was taking her antibiotics but was still experiencing her symptoms. She slept throughout the entire flight, and kept her mask on.

  • Welcome to India
  • They had finally arrived to India, and they were making their way back to the family home.
  • Slide: 18
  • They had finally made their way home, and reunited with their family. They knew it was not going to be a relaxing vacation. A lot of preparations had to be done for the family celebration.
  • Slide: 19
  • Despite, the excitement of visiting India after a long time, Jane continued to feel sick. She was getting worse. She was also extremely confused since she had been taking the antibiotic course for 3 weeks now, and she has not seen any improvement. She decided to visit the doctor in India, as the pain was becoming unbearable.
  • Slide: 20
  • Upon describing her symptoms to the doctor, the doctor concluded that it is best to get her an X-ray, just to see if there is anything causing the persistent headaches.
  • Slide: 21
  • After looking at the X-ray, the doctor was frightened. He determined that it was not just regular sinusitis, but invasive fungal sinusitis. Fungal sinusitis is caused by a spreading of the infection from the sinuses. The doctor immediately recommended emergency surgery, as the headaches were due to the fungus spreading to her brain, which could potentially result in death.
  • Slide: 22
  • The doctors performed the surgery, which took about 4 hours. They spent their time removing the fungus that had accumulated in the cheekbones. The surgery went successfully.
  • Slide: 23
  • Jane was in recovery and the surgery went successfully.
  • Slide: 24
  • The entire family was scared, waiting to hear about Jane's condition.
  • Slide: 25
  • The doctor walked out and said that the family should be very lucky that they brought Jane in on time. If even a week had passed, the fungus would have spread to Jane's brain, causing her to pass away. The family sighed in relief and thanked the doctor for his work. The doctor said that she was doing perfectly fine, and healing should take 1-2 weeks.
  • Slide: 26
  • A couple days later, Jane was feeling perfectly well already. During the follow up appointment, the doctor claimed that the first doctor Jane saw completely put her life at risk without performing a X-ray despite ongoing symptoms, and that she should sue. Jane was happy with the fact that she was healed and did not want to deal with the issue any further.
  • Slide: 27
  • Jane and her family celebrated the function and lived happily ever after!
  • Slide: 28
  • Although Jane is completely healed, she wonders what the state of her life would have been in if she hadn't visited a different doctor. She wonders how the doctor could have been so complacent when it came to her life, especially due to the severity. She wonders whether other patients experience this, and how healthcare could be improved to address every step of diagnosing a symptom.
