  • Arousal Theory:Increasing stress and arousal levels helps to focus motivation but only to a certain point
  • Each individual is going to have their own optimal level of arousal. If arousal is too low we will seek stimulation to increase it.
  • Teachers see this often with students who are bored during lessons. They start trying to increase their stimulation by fidgeting and messing around with other things/their peers.

  • Self-efficacy is an individual's belief that they can accomplish something. This affects motivation as it impacts what tasks students choose to try, what strategies they use, and how they persist through challenges.

  • Self-regulation is the ability to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to achieve goals. While it is often viewed as an individual skill, its development is shaped by relationships, culture, and community.
  • Indigenous perspectives suggest that self-regulation should also be understood through the lens of interconnectedness, observation, and reciprocal relationships rather than individual autonomy alone.
