  • In page 13 paragraph 1 the narrator stated "During the whole of a dull, dark and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hug oppressively low in the heavens..." the author sets the scene by describing the setting.
  • Metaphor
  • In page 14 paragraph 1 the narrator stated "vacant eyelike windows" the author is stating that you can't see anything through the windows. Behind those eyes, behind those windows, there's no thoughts, memories, and no life at all.
  • Symbolism
  • d
  • In page 31 paragraph 48 the narrator explains and expresses his disbelieve as his home was struck by lighting and perished. The statement shows the narrator seeing the house falling to pieces and ending the story of the "House of Usher."
  • Tone
  • In page 29 paragraph 45 the narrator states "Bending closely over him I at length drank in the hideous import of his words." the statement means the narrator from a distance did not hear his words, so he drank his words up.
  • The house is very symbolic because its connected to the family. Every time the family falls apart the house suffers. Just how the family is broken and damaged so is the house. The house symbolizes the deterioration of Usher and Madeline.
  • In page 27 paragraph 34 the narrator states "a faintly luminous and distinctly visible gaseous exhalation" while this statement has some personification, it creates a creepy tone because we wonder who is exhaling.
