Storyboard Text

  • “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
  • I am Colin Kaepernick, I was quarterback for the San Fransisco 49ers for 6 seasons.
  • In the 2016 NFL preseason, I started a protest to face racial injustice and police brutality. After talking to a former Green Beret, Nate Boyer, I decided kneeling during the National Anthem was a good place to start. I was joined by my teamate Eric Reed.
  • There were a lot of different opinions on my protests. Many were supportive of my message, but not my actions. Many believed that I was dishonoring the flag, while some believed I was executing rights the flag gave me.
  • I support Colin and it is his constitutional right to make a statement based on what he believes.
  • Not standing for the flag is lack of respect for our country and those who sacrificed.
  • My protest joined many other athletes and encouraged even more athletes to use their platforms to make change. My protests shined a lot of light on police brutality on African Americans, and similar gestures have been used in protests years later.
  • We support the same movement Colin did and wore Black Lives Matter shirts to our WNBA games as a way of speaking out.
