Hi, Sharky lets play an ionic bonding game. I will be sodium and you be chlorine.
Ok, that sounds fun Jelly!
Help, help, I am Jelly sodium and only have 1 valence electron, it makes me unstable!!!!
Don’t worry Jelly sodium. I am Sharky chlorine, and I have 7 electrons. I am looking for 1 more valence electron. We can bond together and I will take your electron.
So, Sharky chlorine, did you know that I am a metal with a positive charge and bonding with you a nonmetal with a negative charge, will balance us both?
Wow, Jelly Chlorine, I didn’t know that. But I do know I now have a full valence shell of electrons, and you got rid of your electron hanging around your valence shell.
Heres my 1 electron, Sharky chlorine.
Thanks, Jelly sodium. I now have 8 valence electrons.
Now, we are bonded together our name is Jelly sodium Sharky chloride. Our positive and negative charges attract and form and ionic bond.
So, Sharky Chlorine, how did you like the ionic bonding game?
I loved it, Jelly sodium. I learned that sodium is a unstable metal with 1 valence electron and needs to bond with chlorine that is a positive nonmetal with 7 valence electrons to become stable. Together they become sodium chloride.
Thanks, Jelly sodium! Now we are both stable with an even amount of elections. I now have 8 and you have 0.
