Hi, my name is Ella. I've been part of the lower-class Brooklyn community for over 20 years.
RENT DUE
$30,000
$30,000!? Why has the rent been raised up so high! I can't afford this.
Ella is a middle aged women who has lived in the low-class Brooklyn community for over 20 years. She is satisfied in this neighborhood and her apartment complex benefits her socio-economic background.
Now we can't afford to live here anymore
Watch where your going! Why are you guys running so fast?!
We've been residents for years!
We are moving in here, since this area has become more livable and high quality! It suits us perfectly!
Ella's landlord Bailey, gives her a rent notice explaining that the rent has been raised to $30,000, which is a lot more than Ella had been originally paying!
Gentrification in this community can help lower the crime rate and create a safer environment, for you to all live here!
Ella is distressed, because she knows her financial income cannot support her enough to pay this new increased rent. Ella speculates that there must be a reason for this increase, but she is unaware what is happening.
I guess I see how gentrification can be beneficial for this community, but I'm still not very happy with the outcome of this situation..
When the new comers arrive on the scene, Ella and many other residents like her feel displaced and attacked due to the influx of higher class citizens, pushing them out of their homes.
Felix and Jacob are higher class citizens who are contemplating moving in to the area due to the newest improvements in livability. The men explain to Ella the positive effect of gentrification in the Brooklyn community.
After understanding the beneficial aspects of gentrification in her neighborhood, Ella began to recognise that gentrification can have a positive impact on some people, but overall she was afraid, because she knew as a low income worker, that this would affect her negatively.
