Waitakere, chief of Waitakere tribe, waited for his son to come home. He brought a lovely maiden. The tribe accepted her with open arms.When the Hunua Patupaiarehe discovered their princess missing, they became furious. When they learned that she was with the Patupaiarehe of Waitakere, their rage only grew. In order to deal with the Waitakere Patupaiarehe and retake Wairere, a war party was assembled and headed out across the plain.

The two tribes started fighting as they were both enraged. The Waitakere Patupaiarehe summoned their tohunga, their priest, to grab the power from the soil. The tohunga flung deadly spells at the opposition. But this awakened and angered the two atua (gods) Mataaho, keeper of the earth's secrets and his brother Ruaumoko, god of volanoes and earthquakes. The two shook the ground and swallowed the people up.

Two Patupaiarehe were sitting on a hill with a view of the Tamaki volcanic field many years later. "It was not a dream," Wairere stated in sorrowful amazement. Hui said, "No, and we are the only ones left."Although Wairere and Hui have long since departed into the afterlife, their foolishness is still evident in the Tamaki volcanoes.
