  • Cecilia MenendezID: 6258919Standard: MAFS.K.G.1Identify and Describe Shapes
  • What shape is that ?
  • Where do we find them?
  • Hi there super sleuths! Today we've been tasked to find and identify various shapes in our surroundings. We'll be identifying: circles, squares, triangles, rectangles and hexagons.
  • What do these shapes look like?
  • Let me illustrate these for you so you can learn to identify them yourselves. I'll give you the specific characteristics of each so there is no mistaking.
  • Circle-Made of curved lines- It is Round-All points on the curved line are equal distance from the center. This shape is two dimensional. This means its flat.
  • Looks like the shape of the pizza we ate last night.
  • Has anyone seen this shape around recently?
  • I can!
  • I can!
  • I would like for you to come to the board and draw the object that is in the shape of a circle.
  • Can anyone else provide me with an example of a circle?
  • Eactly! Pizza's are round. In the form of a circle.
  • The Sun!
  • Very good! You got this! Indeed, the moon was full last night!
  • The moon was very round last night.
  • This is going to be a breeze for you all. You're very observant. Let me introduce the other shapes and their characteristics.
  • Then I'll have you come up to the board and illustrate the shape in the form you've observed it in.
  • Square has:4 corners4 sides that are all the same length.
  • Square
  • Who can tell me where one might see these shapes around?
  • Triangle
  • Triangles has: 3 corner3 angles
  • Our dining room table and our coffee table are square.
  • My lunch sandwich is triangle shaped.
  • The slices of pizza we had for dinner were triangle shaped.
  • hahaha!
  • Let's work on the next shape. This one likes like a square but it's a little longer.
  • Outstanding! You are all super sleuths! Those were perfect examples.
  • Rectangle
  • There is a very rectangular object up here that we use everyday. Who can see it?
  • Notice it looks like a square but it is longer and it has equal pairs sides. A square's sides are all equal.
  • Rectangle has: 4 straight sides4 cornersIt has 2 long sides, 2 short sides
  • I see it! The chalkboard!
  • Basic Geometrical Shapes
  • Yes! The chalkboard.
  • We've got one more shape to cover. We see this one alot when we are on the road or in a soccer field.
  • I thought it might stump you but you are too clever. Fantastic!
  • Hexagon
  • Hexagon has: 6 sides6 cornersAll 6 sides are straightIt is flat. Two dimensional
  • Where can we find a hexagon? I had mentioned it is common on the road. Can anyone guess?
  • Basic Geometrical Shapes
  • A stop sign!
  • On a soccer ball!
  • Amazing job, Shape Hunters! You've identified common 2 dimensional shapes we see around us all day. Next lesson will cover 3 dimensional shapes.
