- "Old shipmates, friends, the rest of you stand by; I'll make the crossing in my own ship, with my own company, and find out what the mainland natives are- for they may be wild savages, and lawless, or hospitable and god fearing men.' (Homer Lines 70-75)"
- "He seized and drained the bowl, and it went down so fiery and smooth he called for more: (Homer Lines 262-263)"
- "My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy.' (Homer Lines 274-275)"
- My name is Nohbdy
- Odysseus arrives at the island of the Cyclopes where he stumbles upon a cave and decides to look inside. He makes his strongest men explore the island too look out for any danger, since the land had been unknown.
- "I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in the crater eye...(Homer Lines 288-292)"
- While Odysseus and his men explore the inside of the cave they stumble across a cyclops named Polyphemus and his rams. Odysseus and his men had become trapped inside the cave so they came up with a plan to escape. They had given him three bowls of wine in order to get him drowsy.
- "I tied them silently together, twinning cords of willow from the ogre's bed; then slung a man under each middle one to ride there safely, shielded left and right. (Homer Lines 337-340)"
- Polyphemus asks Odysseus for his name and Odysseus decides to trick him by saying his name is Nohbdy. If Odysseus hurts Polyphemus he will say "Nohbdy hurt me."
- "Should destiny intend that he shall see his roof again among his family in his father land, far be that day, and dark the years between. Let him lose all companions, and return under strange sail to bitter days at home.' (Homer 447-452)"
- I am Odysseus from the land of Ithaca
- Once Polyphemus falls asleep, Odysseus stabs him in his single eye, therefore blinding him.
- In order to escape the island without being seen Odysseus comes up with a plan to tie themselves under Polyphemus's rams so they can escape the cave without Polyphemus recognizing them.
- Nohbdy has tricked me
- Odysseus and his men get back on the ship and start rowing back. Odysseus screams out that he was escaping the island due to his fatal flaw of being to prideful. Polyphemus then prays to his father Poseidon to curse Odysseus and his men on their journey back home.
- Curse you Odysseus!!!
