  • Ethos
  • "Five score years ago a great American in whose symbolic shadow we stand today signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This mementos decree is a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flame of the withering injustice"(King)
  • pathos
  • "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."(King)

  • "One hundred years later the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of a Negro is still crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination."(King)
  • He was quoting Lincoln because he fought for the rights of the Negro's, just like Martin Luther King is doing.
  • Ethos
  • "We have also come to this hollowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now." (King)
  • King uses this to emphasize the fact that all the African Americans including his own children are being discriminated just because of the color of their skin.
  • Pathos
  • "There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights." (King)
  • King is saying that all Negro's aren't free even after they were freed over 100 years ago"
  • Logos
  • "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check where as come back marked insufficient funds, and so we have come to cash this check." (king)
  • King said this because he wants to remind us that Lincoln also fought for the rights of the African American's. That he signed the slaves to freedom.
  • He is saying that he will not rest and neither will the rest of the African American's until they are granted the full citizenship they deserve.
  • King said that the African American's have had a bad reputation and they are getting a good reputation back.
