Storyboard Text

  • In Denmark, the former king has died, and a group of soldiers tells his son, Prince Hamlet, that they saw his ghost. Hamlet learns that his father was poisoned by his uncle, who has usurped the throne.
  • Claudius's forgiveness.
  • Hamlet feels that he must avenge his father's death. However, he struggles with the authenticity of the "ghost" and his own indecision about his actions.
  • The deaths
  • Throughout the rising action, Hamlet employs tactics to prove that Claudius murdered his father. He requests a theater company to perform a play depicting a king being poisoned in the ear. Claudius's reaction will reveal his guilt or innocence.
  • The fight and the end
  • Claudius leaves the play and goes to pray, seeking forgiveness for having killed Hamlet's father. Hamlet overhears this and wants to kill him. However, Hamlet believes that if he kills Claudius while he is praying, he will go to heaven.
  • Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius, and Claudius wants Hamlet to be hanged. Hamlet escapes back to Denmark, and Ophelia drowns. Hamlet is challenged to a fencing match by Laertes, who blames Hamlet for the deaths of his sister (Ophelia) and father (Polonius).
  • In the fight, Laertes poisons the tip of his sword. Claudius poisons a cup, and Gertrude dies. In the end, only Horatio remains standing to tell the story.
