Clotaire II (quietly, to his men): “Austrasia weakens. Her rule cannot hold forever.”

613 CE – The borderlands between Neustria and Austrasia The Austrasian nobility, fed up with Brunhilda’s centralization of power and harsh rule, betray her and hand her over to Clotaire II. She is accused of causing the deaths of numerous royals and is publicly executed—likely brutally, though exact methods are debated.
Clotaire II: “Let this be the end of the civil war. One kingdom. One ruler.”
Brunhilda (before execution): “History will remember who held this realm together.”
Courtier (aside): “She ruled like a man—and died for it.”
