  • Jimmy has been attending high school at Jefferson City Public Schools. He has completed a few months of 4th grade, and his teachers and parents are concerned about his gradual decline in grades.

  • Jimmy's parents and the school came together and had an intervention to figure out the best plan for Jimmy's success and to understand where he is falling short
  • Let's figure this out!
  • Intervention: An intervention is a tool used by educators, parents, and special education staff to address any deficiencies a student is facing in their curriculum or progress. 
  • Slide: 4
  • Not all students require an intervention, however if there are slips in progress or behavioral changes, all students may be subjected! (NCOII., 2026)
  • Interventions are used to evaluate academic, emotional and behavioral statuses and offer support where needed.
  • Differentiation is the practice of giving students specific aid based on their needs. Some students may need to cover less reading material before they are up to speed, while others may need support to keep pace. (EL Education., 2026).

  • After the intervention, the staff realized that Jimmy was confusing letters and mixing them up, which was causing some struggles with progress in reading and writing.
  • It was clear Jimmy needed some help, so he was assigned a literacy coach who would support him when he was having a hard time. 
  • NOTE! Differentiation can apply to any student in special education depending on their specific needs!

  • Just down the hall, a deaf student named Timothy just started his first day and is meeting with his new aides. 
  • Mr. Jared, Timothy's new helper, is signing to Timothy about the school's new accommodations, which will help with his learning.

  • This is one of our computer labs, where Timothy will spend a lot of time using visual aids and other tools to keep up with the curriculum!
  • The best part about these accommodations is that the computer lab is public, so Timothy will always be immersed among his peers!

  • Accommodations are aids that help a student with disabilities complete daily tasks and meet learning goals.

  • Examples: - Speech-to-text aids - Chunked-up tasks or assignments - Seating charts based on a variety of needs or reasoning.
  • Adaptations Additional Information:

  • Adaptations are changes made in the environment or curriculum that are necessary for a student's success. 
  • Hello class, we understand that this was an oral presentation; however, Timothy will be writing a paper and turning it in instead 
  • Modifications Additional Information: 
  • Slide: 10
  • Other Adaptations can be, but are not limited to: - Classroom layout, creating quiet zones or group areas- Curriculum adjustment - Or alterations to the final product or instruction (University of San Diego, 2025)

  • Modifications come into play when a student's disabilities prevent them from succeeding in their current curriculum. 
  • Sarah had a TBI, or Traumatic Brain Injury, which has left her paralyzed and with minimal cognitive function.

  • Sarah cannot keep up with her peers or the standard curriculum and requires several modifications. Sarah meets with MR. Murphy, who provides a specifically tailored workload that meets her personal needs.

  • Mr. Murphy takes the time to consider Sarah's plan. Other modifications required for her will be: - An Alternative graduation plan - An alternative learning plan - Reduced workload and assignments (Virginia Department of Education, 2025)

  • SDI, or specifically designed instruction, falls under IDEA and grants students with special needs both the right to an adjusted lesson plan and the right to learn the same lesson plans as their peers when applicable. 
  • This includes understanding how a student learns in different environments and forms!

  • This source covers modifications for students with disabilities that could help with their daily tasks. This includes both curriculum modifications and behavioral or social modifications.

  • This source speaks to the specific instructional needs of certain students. It also provides information on presenting the same curriculum as the students' peers or changing it to fit the student's needs.
