Persephone's mother, Demeter, goddess of agriculture, wasso distraught over her daughter's kidnapping that she refused to let anythinggrow. The plants were dying and the fields were cold and barren.

Persephone is miserable in the darkness and unanimity ofthe Underworld. Very few things grow there, such as cypresses and pomegranates.
RESOLUTION
Zeus appeals to Demeter to allow the plants to regrow toprevent great loss of life. She denounces Zeus for his part in kidnapping herdaughter, and demands that Persephone be returned to her.
Zeus agrees that Persephone can return to her mother, butbecause she had eaten food from the Underworld, Persephone must spend half theyear with Hades.
When Persephone is in the Underworld, Demeter misses herand causes the cold of winter. When she returns to land, Persephone, goddess ofspring, brings warmth and brightness to the world.
