the war came to an end on April 9th 1865 Gen Robert E Lee of the confederate forces of the south met Gen U.S. grant of the federal forces of the north met in the front polar of the home of Wilmer McLean
the terms
hopefully there not as harsh
Gen Lee requested the terms of the surrender expecting harsh treatment from the union from the union commander but grants terms were simple and humane as both men
pain and sorrow
i cant believe i just did that
we can show our joy by not celebrating
grant did not look like a good military leader his cloths where the same a the lower soldiers in his army his boots were covered in mud but Lee was dressed at his best
celebrating
Lee had asked grant to write the terms of the surrender grant sat at an table and wrote the agreement and it said the confederate army would give its weapons and property
as lee left the house his face was filled pain sorrow but it seams that he did not see the union officers the stood as a sign if respect
on the other side the union soldiers began to celebrate they fired there guns to cheer over the victory over Lees army Grant heard them and order them to stop and said we can show our best joy by refusing to celebrate there defeat
