The suitors Hortensio and Gremio are vying for Baptista's daughter Bianca. But Baptista declared that Katherine, her sister, had to get married before Bianca. Tranio notices that while Bianca is his servant, Lucentio falls in love.
Hortensio persuades his friend Petruchio—who is in the market for a wife—to wed Katherine. Petruchio makes the decision to pursue Katherine's marriage in an effort to appease Bianca's suitors as well as for financial gain.
Baptista gives Petruchio permission to wed Katherine. Petruchio is dressed inappropriately for the ceremony and arrives late. He's already acting rudely towards Katherine, demanding that she leave early as part of his plan to "tame" her.
As per Petruchio's scheme to "tame" Katherine, he had starved her and kept her sleep deprived for days. She has to thank him before he will feed her. At this point, Katherine starts to submit to her husband.
Katherine now complies with all of Petruchio's instructions. She concurs with him that the sun is the moon and vice versa as they travel to Padua. She obeys Vincentio's instructions and respects him instead of going along with Petruchio.
At the wedding feast for Bianca and Lucentio, all of the characters get together. To the surprise of all, Petruchio emerges victorious in the wager between Hortensio, Lucentio, and himself over whose wife will be the most obedient. Kate addresses the other women on what it means to be a wife.
"That is, not to bestow my younger daughter before I have a husband for the elder."
"Petruchio, shall I then come roundly to thee and wish thee to a shrewed ill-favored wife?
"To me she is married, not unto my clothes."
"The poorest service is repaid with thanks and so shall mine before you touch the meet"
"The sun it is not if you say its not."
"Thy husband is thy Lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee..."
