- Montresor runs meets Fortunato during Carnival in Italy and offers to share a really fine bottle of Amontillado wine with him. This bottle, on the other hand, is in his catacombs. It's late at night, and Fortunato appears to be sick.
- CLIMAX
- Montresor, the narrator, argues that Fortunato has insulted him and is preparing his vengeance. Despite the fact that he does not reveal what Fortunato has done, he makes it clear that it is inexcusable.
- FALLING ACTION
- Fortunato is lured down into the dark and creepy wine vault by Montresor. As the tension mounts, Montresor repeatedly asks Fortunato if he wants to turn back since he seems unwell. To help with his cough, Fortunato continues to consume wine.
- RESOLUTION
- There is no Amontillado when they get at their location, but there is a hole in the wall. Montresor imprisons Fortunato within and begins erecting a brick wall.
- Fortunato begs for Montresor to stop as the last few bricks are poured, but it's too late. Montresor has finally exacted his vengeance.
- Only the sound of Fortunato's jingling jester bells can be heard as Montresor leaves the grave. He replaces the crypt's bones. Finally, he declares that no one has bothered them in 50 years; he has succeeded in his scheme!
