Storyboard Text

  • Hey John, we have been learning about comic strips this week and I had a few questions. What is a panel and are there any types?
  • A panel is a framed image. It is the camera angle at which the image is taken. Splash is a type of a panel which does not have a border.
  • Thanks, what is the space between 2 normal panels?
  • The space between the panels is called gutters. It separated 2 panels giving time for the reader to visualize the story.
  • That is interesting Sometimes I see some bubbles and shapes. In those shapes are some words. Sometimes there is also a rectangle in a different colour. When I read that it feels like the authour is talking to us. What is these shapes.
  • Jim the shapes in which there are words are called speech bubbles. The speech bubbles show us what the characters are saying. These are frames around the characters’ language, a kind of ‘direct speech’, where the characters speak for themselves. If these appear as clouds, they represent the character’s thoughts. If they appear in jagged lines, the character is shouting. The different colored shape is a voice over. The narrators have the possibility to speak directly to the reader through a voice over. Usually this is done with a hard line separating the narrator’s speech at the top or bottom of a panel from the image within the panel.
  • Wow I never knew that!! Sometimes I see some lines near the character. Examples include when a car is driving, sweat dropping etc. What are they called.
  • These are called emanate. his term refers to the tear drops, sweat drops, question marks, or motion lines that artists draw besides characters’ faces to portray emotion.
  • One last question, I promise, are there any types of transitions that are there?
  • There are 6 transitions in total. Moment, action, subject, scene, aspect, non-sequitur.
  • Thank you so much John. I have a test coming up and this has really helped me to prepare for the test.
  • No problem Jim! Anything for you. Wish you good luck! Now let's get in the car.
